Education Sets Us Free - Are You a Critical Thinker?

Freemasonry is the world's oldest fraternity. Of course, many romantic myths as well as many negative misunderstandings and much misinformation can spring-up in a fraternity that is at least 600 years old if not older. Note: The fraternity entered its modern form in London, June 1717 with the founding of the Grand Lodge of England; however, references to Masonry as a trade guild (its probable origin) goes back much further.


Romantic Myths are stories that are nice to read about and often make people feel good or noble about themselves. Freemasonry has plenty of these. Hopefully, information shared here will put some of these myths into perspective. There are generally three schools of Freemasonry origin: (1) The Authentic School - backed by historical evidence; (2) The Romantic School - incorporating potential but unproven speculative tales - such as descent from the Knights Templar; and (3) The Fantastic School - stories that are the product of imaginations such as Noah or Adam was the original Mason, Masons who built the pyramids were the origin of the modern fraternity, and so on.


Outright misinformation has been a product spread by people since the first third of the 1700s. These anti-masonry works usually fall into three categories: (1) Freemasonry as a Religion or Anti-Religious; (2) Freemasonry as a conspiracy to take-over the world; and (3) A Miscellaneous category to catch all other anti-masonic works.


Interestingly, anti-masonic works have been popular sellers since the first book in the early 1700s up until today with many such works appealing to a public that often accepts anything in print as gospel. Being popular sellers, these works bring wealth to their authors. But, if one examines each of these works, they will find that they use sources which are all from earlier anti-masonic works - thus one uncritically book is cited by another author then another author and so forth - quite an incestuous chain of citations. Note: most of the anti-masonic writings fall in the same three categories as listed above.


In summary, the Masonic Builders want to present in one place, education for both Masons and Non-Masons. It will fairly present both sides: Pro & Con. It will do this through posted information as well as links to internet sites so that critical thinkers can decide for themselves.
